Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings for Kids

Dr. Sara and Dr. Zach strongly recommend that parents plan to bring in their children for a first dental visit once they reach their first birthday. This appointment will be very brief and gentle; we’ll simply check their mouth for any concerns and provide some helpful tips on maintaining good oral health at home. As your son or daughter grows and matures, we’ll begin to incorporate professional cleanings, “do it yourself” brushing and flossing guidelines, and more.

Dental Sealants

If there is one single dental issue that children are most at risk for over their early years, it’s cavities! Cavities can develop in any tooth, but they’re most common in molars and premolars, also known as the back teeth. This is because you use these teeth to chew, and they have deep grooves that can trap bacteria over time. In order to keep these vulnerable areas of your child’s smile safer, our doctors prescribe dental sealants. Sealants are applied to the chewing surfaces of these teeth so that they function as a barrier, blocking out food particles.

Fluoride Treatments

Many children aren’t actually getting enough exposure to fluoride throughout their daily lives. Without this friendly mineral, their teeth aren’t as well-supported against the threat of cavities as they could be. Children’s Oral Conscious Sedation

Our team is great at helping even nervous children feel safe and calm while in the chair, but for those who need a little extra support, we offer oral sedation. Your child will be given medication to take at home on the day of their appointment, and depending on how they respond, we may give them more when they arrive. This will put them in a deep state of relaxation, and they’ll remain awake the entire time. The effects of the sedation may last until the evening or following morning, so plan to have your child stay home and rest after their appointment.

Frenectomies

Lip and tongue-ties restrict the movement of these parts of the mouth, causing basic tasks like eating, speaking, and even breathing to be quite difficult or painful. They can make things especially frustrating and uncomfortable for breastfeeding mothers and babies. But, with a quick and precise frenectomy, we can remove the excess oral tissue to help a child regain their full oral function. We use a laser for this procedure, which reduces bleeding and post-treatment swelling to the point of practically not existing.
