Aging & Dental Cosmetics: Can You Be Too Old for Cosmetic Dentistry?

It’s natural for people to “age out” of some activities and hobbies over the years. A middle-aged adult could give up their tendency to eat sweets, while a senior may be too frail to go jogging. Still, this process doesn’t have to keep you from a gorgeous grin. The reality is that you can never be too old for cosmetic dentistry; just let your Dallas dentist explain. So, here’s why cosmetic dental work has no age limit and some examples of its senior-friendly treatments.

Dental Cosmetics Have No Age Limit

Despite the rumors, old age isn’t a big concern in dental cosmetics. Good candidates for its treatments just need to have (relatively) healthy mouths. If you meet that criteria, a dentist can give you nearly any of their aesthetic services. It won’t matter if you’re 65, 85, or even 105 years old.

However, seniors are at greater risk of having pre-existing oral issues. You’re more likely to get tooth decay and gum disease as you age. Given that fact, your dentist may need to address certain problems before your cosmetic work. A cavity or infection could ruin treatment results otherwise.

Cosmetic Dental Options for Seniors

A good number of dental services can make a senior’s smile much prettier. Some examples of these treatments include:

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening (per its name) brightens your grin, using bleaching gel to remove stains from tooth enamel. It can often whiten a patient’s smile by up to six to eight shades. The treatment is also ideal for older patients, as its gel is non-toxic, and seniors often have stained teeth.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are tooth-sized shells placed on the fronts of teeth. Once placed, they can hide a wide range of smile flaws – chips, stains, cracks, etc. That means people will only see a beautiful smile, as each shell is made of pretty and lifelike porcelain. As for safety, veneers are harmless for seniors and compensate for any lost enamel.

Dental Bonding

For a dental bonding procedure, a dentist applies tooth-colored resin to your teeth. This substance hides minor smile faults (stains, chips, etc.) from view and matches the color of your other teeth. For that reason, a bonding treatment can quickly touch up a smile in a single dental visit. It’s also safe for any age group, as its resin isn’t toxic and won’t damage enamel or gums.

Knowing you’re never too old for cosmetic dentistry can be a relief. With that said, consider seeing your dental provider for a well-deserved treatment.
